I have taught dozens students from over 20 countries about songwriting, guitar playing, singing, lyric writing, piano, ukulele and more. For begining students I like to start from a foundational stand point. It is very important to enstill good practice habits and technique in order not to develop bad habits in your playing. For drumming and other instruments, starting with rudiments, learning how to read music, and playing scales are a great way to help a student build their technique and ear up. I think it is really important to ask what kind of music the student is into or show them how the foundational basics can be used in an actual playing situation instead of just a boring regimented routine. Because every student has different levels of experiences, aptitudes, and learning styles, my teaching methods vary based on each student. Generally, I work with the student to come up with a set of goals to work towards achieving. I teach the fundamentals of the instrument through learning songs that are of interest to the student. I generally use notation (sheet music) and will use instrument workbooks if it seems appropriate, while focusing mainly on developing the ear through listening. Read More

For beginners, I show them basic chords (Major, Minor and Diminished) if they're a guitarist and if they're a bassist, I teach them octaves and basic waking lines. Once they progress, I show them common scales and chord progressions used in modern music and focus on developing technique. If they're intermediate to advanced, I ask them what they feel they need work on and we focus on that. For example, a student might want to know how to solo over a basic rock or blues progression or the bassist might wanna know how to make his basslines swing more. Read More

My teaching experience started in 2009. Since then I have consistently taught students ranging from 3 years old to wise adults over 80 years. I generally teach in my home studio because I find students benefit much more than being at their home. I make exceptions for those with busy schedules (however I highly recommend having lessons outside your home).
