For beginning students I like to start with building good technique and posture and making sure that the fundamentals are practiced thoroughly.  I grew up learning through the Suzuki Method and I like to teach that way as well.  Suzuki said that any child could learn to play music because like a child learns language through listening, a child can also learn to play music the same way.  With support from teachers and parents or guardians a child can become a successful and accomplished musician. For students with a little more experience, or an adult who is just getting back into playing, I will get them to work towards an attainable goal and figure out what it is that they want to get from the lessons. For all of my students, I let them pick a song (vocal) or piece (violin) that they would like to sing or play. This way I can analyze what level they are on. For my voice students, I start with vocal warm-up exercises of the different vowels. It helps me to understand their range as well as tone of voice.
