The trumpet is an ancient instrument that was initially used to send signals across great distances. Many developments over the years led to a very good sounding baroque trumpet and eventually the modern valve trumpet, which was developed in the early 19th century. Even with these changes, the trumpet has retained its 'soul' as an instrument of power, glory, and grandeur. These traits are present in the classical trumpet repertoire and are also exemplified in blues, jazz, funk, and other pop styles where the trumpet is used.
We recommend students no younger than 8 begin an instrument that requires the breath support and lung capacity such as a trumpet. Some students have found success as young as five years of age, but this fairly rare.
There are many student and intermediate models of trumpets available. It also may be possible to acquire a used trumpet or rental. The thing to look for when renting or buying used is that the instrument can be taken apart and put together easily and that the brass is not dented or damaged in any way. Your trumpet teacher can help you select an instrument and all the accessories required to keep it in great condition.
The trumpet requires a strong physical lung capacity and a strong musical awareness. Your trumpet lessons will develop you musicianship, breathing, tone production, and theory knowledge. Playing the trumpet also unlocks possibilities to perform in brass bands, orchestras, and wind ensembles; opening doors to a rich and vibrant community of musicians, teachers, and students.
