As beginners, I recommend the first Hal Leonard Essential Elements Band books with EEi. The EEi feature allows students to access online features that coordinate with their private lessons and enhance their ability to learn. As students progress through the book, I add solo repertoire to the student's EEi account so they can both hear it played and record their own performance of each work of band music. Guitar students start with Essential Elements, piano students begin with Piano Adventures/Adult Piano Adventures, and both offer interactive online components which enhance the student's resources and ability to practice and learn between lessons. However, if students have another book for a school band class, I am more then happy to work with them to preserve some line of consistency in the students education. As they progress, I look to find more advanced etude and solo books, focusing on music that is of interest to the student. I also have a collection of fundamentals and warm ups that I have saved from my middle school, high school, and college years that I will use with students depending on ability level. I try to maintain organization and give my students goals to accomplish. In this, I aim to teach them how to create these goals for themselves, giving them a say in what they choose to work on. I will push a student in whichever direction they are aiming for. I maintain an attitude of positivity and try to encourage my students as much as possible.
