I started teaching violin and guitar lessons in high school and was fortunate enough to have had students throughout college on a much wider array of instruments. Lately, since Ive begun teaching from my home studio in Leicester, NC, Ive also been able to hone my skills as a performer in the diverse music scene that flourishes in these mountains. Because of this my teaching has grown to embrace and celebrate the improvisational and communal aspects of folk music as well as the rigorous, methodical approach to technique and theory that I learned as a classically trained violinist. To begin, I will start with chords and scales to get a student used to understanding of notes and progressions. Next, I would go over theory and technique in order to blossom a stylistic way of playing for the student. Next, I would start with simple etudes and pieces for each student to learn and master. All of my bands received first division and second division ratings at festivals and my students received first and second division ratings at individual solo and ensemble festivals. I began teaching while at music college, and soon found that I enjoyed imparting my love of music to others more than I enjoyed performing myself! I have been teaching private lessons at home and in students’ homes for 10 years. I taught classroom music in school in the UK for 5 years before my move to the USA.
