I am a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. In 1992, I graduated from Baruch (CUNY) with a degree in Applied Music. I have performed in Nashville and in New York City which has been one of my greater experiences as a musician, and I have had the opportunity to play at Jazz and Country Western clubs. I also am part of the September Concert Event every year for the past 9 years performing with my students and holding a tribute with The Loupakis Gymnastics from Astoria in Athens Square Park. As a music annotator, analyst and critic, I have worked for over 15 years with major arts agencies, technical journals and CD labels in performing arts media, technical writing, editing and proofreading, following a career as a successful classical touring musician. In 2010, after living 25 years in Manhattan, I moved back to where I was born – Bergen County. Working in my teaching studios in both Teaneck and New York, I specialize in teaching and coaching up-and-coming young musicians, college-bound guitarists, adults with backgrounds in other instruments, in classical, acoustic and crossover styles. Beyond this I covet opportunities to show all students that through the development they experience in studying music, they become citizens who are better equipped to contribute to their communities. The opportunities for music students to realize the value of listening, and the value in applying ones attention to extended ideas, are among a music instructors greatest responsibilities. I believe that their involvement in music or another art form equip them with invaluable tools that will help them throughout their lives in both career and personal settings. Read More

I teach strong instrumental fundamentals, along with music theory comprehension, sight-reading, and ear training. I also like to emphasize ensemble playing using instrumental duets. I use appropriate level texts based on the student's experience first and age level second but always teach from what will make either younger students or adults feel comfortable. Fun is a must in one's progression but focus is key to success. I've helped students win concerto and ensemble awards and have also brought adults into the professional-level playing world through lessons. Read More

While students arrive to my lessons with an array of different skills, I always make sure they have the fundamentals of music down; such as keeping a consistent rhythm and ensuring the notes choices are harmonically pleasing and intentional based on the piece. Making sure the student is learning what they enjoy learning as well as what I feel are the necessary next steps to improve their skills are essential in the learning process no matter what age the student is. I adapt my lesson plan according to the student's level, interests and hobbies away from music. All beginner students start with an Essential Elements series of books to help them understand the process of actually playing their instrument. Once this has been achieved or if the student is already past this level, I like to inquire about what the student wants to learn and improve on. With this information, I give them resources or step by step guidelines to help them with their goal. Read More

I believe in adhering to the needs of the student, be it ear training, sight reading, or visual learning. Music is a complex and beautiful journey. I believe in providing students with all of the skills they need to acheive their goals. Some people want to play jazz, some people want to perform, and some people just want to strum songs they can sing along too...it is all music, and my job is to help people express that. Read More

Instruments: Guitar Drums

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I learned drums first, it was my first interest, then guitar because I loved to sing and write songs as well and I need to accompany myself and drums just was't cutting it! LOL I also learned piano and bass to accompany myself in my original songs as I record and my Customized Song Business has a full band recording listing and I am the full Band!

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
A normal lesson for me in either drums or guitar consists of half hour time slot learning exercises from the chosen books , new concept lesson and duets with me or playing along to streaming music of your choice or my choice. We incorporate the lessons learned into the songs we choose. Fun , fun fun!!!!!!!

When will I start to see results?
If your child is practicing in between lessons you will see results in a couple of weeks. They will know how to play either instrument exercises, or play a familiar melody or song or play along with a song. They should in a few weeks be able to explain some of what they are learning.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I was inspired by my 6th grade teacher who on Fridays in Catholic school bought in a guitar and sang songs with us in the afternoon before we went home. I was inspired again by a drummer in our church who was awesome and spoke to him about lessons and he gave me his practice pad and phone number of his drum teacher. The rest is Hisrory!

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
I suggest the student practice at least 3 to 5 times per week by reviewing over the lesson from the week before and also weeks prior to review as well. Plus be sure to play along to songs you enjoy if you are at the level of playing your instrument along with streaming music or videos. If you are still a novice and you have songs you would like to learn I will try my best to include them in your lesson so you can play along in some capacity either by playing melody notes, easier chords or I can send you a simple video of me playing the song for you to duet to.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child is asking questions about a particular instrument or enjoys watching others play that instrument or asks you about learning a particular instrument they may be interested in learning how to play that instrument. Set up a trial lesson with a music teacher to find out!
