For begginers, being adults or children, I always start with a set of easier musics that don't include very hard chords, but that may interest the person in what they're doing. The only difference between the children and the adult would be the guitar size and the amount of practicing and how often they need to practice. The key point is to have fun during the lessons to stimulate practicing every so often so that no matter how hard the songs are they can do it. Read More

This would be my first professional setting teaching. Ive taught friends before but this is new to me. I think of teaching as a learning experience for both parties in that I get to go over my fundamentals and at the same time get to see someone else benefit from it. Teaching in general is extremely rewarding that way, watching thr student pick up after the teaching. Its a pleasure for both the teacher and the sudent. Read More

Nothing is more exciting for me to watch than when a student gains confidence within music! As a teacher it's important for me to lay the fundamentals and strengthen their dexterity in music. However, artists are born when a student's individuality is nurtured and they express themselves with the tools they've been given. It's one thing to gain knowledge in how to sing (or play), but it's another when you can communicate effectively with your instrument so that everyone else can feel it. Read More

I began teaching when I was a junior in highchool 5 years ago. As I progressed and study music at college I've kept on teaching as I've kept on learning, both at school and at home. Consistency is key and I always ingrain this into my students, no matter the level. The more you play the more you'll foster a love for your instruments! Being classically trained has given me a phenomenal base for my playing and I always try and incorporate the excellent form and technique it produces when teaching, especially with students of different genres! I began my musical journey on the drums, which quickly led me to the guitar and bass guitar as well, all three of which I studied with Matt Thompson in Frederick, MD. In high school, I ended up gravitating towards the bass as my primary instrument, and a growing interest in jazz caused me to add the upright bass to my collection of instruments. Little did I know that this would become an even bigger obsession of mine! Read More

I love to spend time with my students listening to some of their personal playlists and picking out songs from there for them to work on. Once I understand a student's taste, I love to show them other artists they may like and help expose them to new music. I try to balance the lessons with this type of work and more structured technical skill development. Music should be fun, exciting, and stimulating. Read More

My teaching style is conversational. We created a project or topic. I'll tell you my experiences & listen to your questions. I will customize exercises or solutions to any issue you may have. I teach the student how to get a natural feel that includes tone, time, & finesse. The goal is to get the student sounding like they have been playing longer than they have actually been. Applying these abilities to songs the students are interested in is the next step. Read More

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I learned drums first, it was my first interest, then guitar because I loved to sing and write songs as well and I need to accompany myself and drums just was't cutting it! LOL I also learned piano and bass to accompany myself in my original songs as I record and my Customized Song Business has a full band recording listing and I am the full Band!
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
A normal lesson for me in either drums or guitar consists of half hour time slot learning exercises from the chosen books , new concept lesson and duets with me or playing along to streaming music of your choice or my choice. We incorporate the lessons learned into the songs we choose. Fun , fun fun!!!!!!!
When will I start to see results?
If your child is practicing in between lessons you will see results in a couple of weeks. They will know how to play either instrument exercises, or play a familiar melody or song or play along with a song. They should in a few weeks be able to explain some of what they are learning.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
I suggest the student practice at least 3 to 5 times per week by reviewing over the lesson from the week before and also weeks prior to review as well. Plus be sure to play along to songs you enjoy if you are at the level of playing your instrument along with streaming music or videos. If you are still a novice and you have songs you would like to learn I will try my best to include them in your lesson so you can play along in some capacity either by playing melody notes, easier chords or I can send you a simple video of me playing the song for you to duet to.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child is asking questions about a particular instrument or enjoys watching others play that instrument or asks you about learning a particular instrument they may be interested in learning how to play that instrument. Set up a trial lesson with a music teacher to find out!
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I was inspired by my 6th grade teacher who on Fridays in Catholic school bought in a guitar and sang songs with us in the afternoon before we went home. I was inspired again by a drummer in our church who was awesome and spoke to him about lessons and he gave me his practice pad and phone number of his drum teacher. The rest is Hisrory!
