The methods I typically use vary depending on the level of my students. For beginners, I like to use the Rubank elementary method for flute and a beginners music theory book of their choice. I will also let them choose their own beginner flute solo book and help them work on band music if they are in the school band. Once my students progress to an intermediate and/or advanced level, I utilize more advanced methods such as Taffanel and Gaubert grand exercises and complete method for flute, Marcel Moyse De La Sonorite, Ernesto Kohler etudes, The Modern flutist Etudes and Caprices, and will start to introduce the "flute standards" repertoire. For beginner piano students I generally work out the Faber Piano Adventures and for adults I use The Older Beginner Piano Course by Bastien. For Flute students I use the Trevor Wye Beginners Book for the Flute. Clarinet I use the Rubank Method books. For beginning and intermediate students, I like to assign short pieces from method books such as Student Instrumental Course and Rubank. For more advanced students, I will help them explore their particular interests, introduce them to traditional repertoire, and for jazz/rock/pop students, aid them in the process of transcribing the music they love, which benefits their vocabulary as well as their ears. For beginners I often start with the Standard of Excellence, but it does not take long before we start to get into more individualized education. For example, a student may be bound for high school jazz band, in which case we will immediately begin on music theory and scale/mode practice from as early as 5th grade. On the other hand, I may have a high school flute student who wants to audition for conservatory, in which case I would use some Marcel Moyse books, orchestral excerpt practice, and standard solo repertoire. When teaching such a specialized topic as the flute, I cater to specific needs of that particular student by bringing out their strengths and providing consistent and genuine positive reinforcement. I use method books such as Trevor Wye, Rubank, and Anderson etudes, depending on the level of the student. In addition to those, I also provide some of my own materials such as scales, fingering charts, and pieces.
