For beginning students I always begin with a methods book, I believe that good fundamentals are what makes a good musician, but I also teach ear training methods thereby giving the student the best in both worlds. Once the fundamentals and foundation are efficient, then according to the instrument I move to solo repertoire or experimentation or interpretation. I have an associate degree in the arts, with emphasis in music. All throughout high school I studied, piano, voice and violin. I began private teaching on the violin when I was 16 years old and it was then, that I realized what a privilege it was to teach and watch my young summer students excel and then play in the youth orchestra at the end of the summer. For the beginner learning to play the piano for the first time, I typically start with Bastiens or Alfreds piano books, theory, and technique. For Older beginners, I start with scales, theory and technique exercises combined with early repertoire and ear training. For vocal students, I focus on warm- ups, and technique exercises, followed by coaching. Work with acquiring sight singing skills, ear training, theory, technique and interpretation. With an individualized approach, I teach musicians of varying ages and skill-levels through different genres (classical, musical theater, opera, RB, pop, folk, jazz, contemporary worship, etc). My lessons are developed to meet the needs of each student on their musical path. Correct posture and vocal health always come first.
