I taught high school band and choir as well as K-5 music education for 35 years. In the public school I have directed musical dramas and up to 4 concerts a year with students of all ages. In the classroom, I taught group piano, recorder, voice, group guitar, many different types of dances and ear training. I believe music is best learned like a second language. When we learn any language we first listen and then imitate what we hear. My approach is based on this principle. I start my beginner students with a series of examples to listen to, along with experiments to try. This approach is fun and we actually start playing music very quickly! Its very exciting!! For beginning students, I strive to teach the basics of music theory while learning the fundamentals of producing characteristic tone on their instrument. I typically start by working through the Essential Elements method book and introduce solos, ensembles, and orchestral excerps when appropriate. If the student is a part of a school or community ensemble, I work with the student on any pieces that their ensemble is preparing for performance. Read More
