For beginning students who are children, I typically start with note naming and sound. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I typically begin with Hal Leonard's books, levels 1-5. These are great and pair well with theory and scale techniques. I also enforce regular flashcards to memorize notes, markings, and terms. These also pair well with the books. As the students begin to grasp basic concepts, I introduce "fun" books that they may choose: for some, it is classical or pop, and for others, it is musical theatre. I want to give all my students a background in classical music to prepare them for possible further education in music and give them confidence among classically-trained musicians. I also want my curriculum to include non-classical musical styles that each particular student enjoys and relates to. The method book I begin younger students on is Piano Adventures by Faber and Faber. There are 5 Level books to complete. We use the lesson book, as well as the technique book. I also supplement with solo repertoire and various materials. For the older beginner, I use Alfred's Basic Adult All-In-One Course, as well as supplemental solo repertoire.
