If a student isn't having fun learning the instrument then I am doing something wrong! Learning should be fun and a joy not a chore. I try to encourage the students to practice without being told to do so. With that comes a joy of doing it on your own and for themselves not for anyone else. After graduating from my Bachelors program I began teaching both private voice and elementary-high school vocal and general music. Once I get to know the student and their motivation, inspiration and desires, we build a better understanding of each other. Early on (both in the teaching relationship and in each lesson) one must assess where the student is, as to technical and musical growth, and with the music at hand. Then one finds, models, explains and encourages the next steps the student can achieve.
