I typically will start each student with preliminary lesson that allows me a chance to assess the student's current level, and knowledge base. This preliminary lesson also gives me a chance to do what I call a "method book fitting" this allows me to assess how compatible different method books are with my students personality and learning style. For beginning students who are children, I like to start with a book filled with colors and pictures and that contains solos and theory. I beileve this captures their attention and can also help them relate it to something that, to them, is fun. I primarily like to use Alfred's Basic Piano Library book which continues in sequence.
