I try my best to keep lessons fun, especially with the younger students. For example, Sometimes we play music games, sometimes we walk/dance to learn about rhythm, sometimes we sing. I also have small group practices each month to combine students at about the same level, they play togher, they perform for each other, make constructive suggestions and encourage each other. Classes are customized per the student's individual needs. For some students, this means a standard repertoire: Schradiek, Scevcik, Hrimaly for violin. Hanon for piano. But for others, they would do better with a less formal approach. In all cases, the use of the ear is fundamental and primal. We will learn how to hear, and how to listen for timbres and intervals. I have taught part time through the Chicago Public Schools where I worked with two kindergarden aged students.
