From experience, Leonard provides the most thorough book to grasp the ability to learn violin. Scale practice and listening sessions would also be a consideration for children as repetition is best to help the younger audience learn such an intricate instrument. I teach the basics using a combination of methods, customizing lessons to each student's skill level, ability level, and interest (classical/folk/modern). For beginning students I suggest using the Suzuki Method, or Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. I like to let each student to progress at their own pace. Patience is the key here when learning to play a new music instrument. I am very flexible and layback. Always start where the student is, and take them from there. Always encourage and inspire students to be better than yesterday. Progress, no matter the amount, is progress. Take your own pace. If you have a specific deadline, for example a college audition, you will have to commit to practicing more than usual and we will create a plan of action. Also, I do write letters of recommendation. For all beginner students I like to start with Essential Elements 2000 for violin. I find it is a great way to introduce reading music notation for students who havent learned yet. Once the student has a good grasp on reading music and playing in upright position, I like to introduce introductory solo repertoire with Suzuki Violin School. I find this is a great way to introduce violin techniques like tone development along with performance elements. Read More
