Since college, I have focused on honing my skills as an educator, having taught in both public school and private lesson settings. I have worked as an orchestra teacher in both Elmhurst and St. Charles in addition to maintaining a thriving private studio, serving diverse learners aged six to 60. Lessons are mainly based on the Suzuki method but they are enhanced through extra skill building exercises specifically prescribed for each student. The student does not need to develop exceptional musicianship, but they are required enough interest in developing musical skills. Musical education is as important as developing math or language skills in developing the mental abilities in children. In essence, my love of teaching stems from my Mom's love of teaching. She sincerely desired to teach my siblings and myself to pursue our highest dreams. It turned out that I did succeed as a star performer in music, on stages around the world. But also, when I decided to settle down, I added education to my 10-year plan. So, I went back to school for another master's degree, and taught music in CPS - performing three nights per week with my the Bartels/Benson duo, Connexion Band, Prohibition Orchestra, Bryan Skyler Trio, and other groups. I started teaching in high school, with my very own private students, and coached non-music major ensembles during my undergraduate degree in addition to receiving pedagogy training. As many performers do, I began as a reluctant teacher, but quickly realized that teaching is extremely rewarding and fun! I make sure that the students are enjoying the lessons while pushing them to play as well as they can.
