Before anything, I find out what the goal of the lesson is. I always want to know what the students want, so I can plan around them. The lesson will always be about the student! After discussing the goal of the lesson, we will find repertoire, etudes, or other materials that either benefit the student technically, or will simply be enjoyable to the student. Lending students a safe and educational place to create can lead to great confidence that spans all areas of life and study. Because of this, I encourage involvement in the community where possible. Everyone has different expectations; some want to become proficient, while others want to become virtuosos, and I frame my lessons around the student's goals. The student is never talked down to or berated, and always encouraged; music is hard enough without negative comments.
