In order to enjoy playing our instruments for many years to come, I emphasize the importance of healthy technique in order to prevent injury. Through the process of learning scales and pieces, I make sure to incorporate a focus on correct posture, a relaxed left hand, and healthy bow arm so that playing the violin is a positive experience for each student. I use a wide range of materials depending on a student's interests and background - I often teach music reading to students who are reading for the first time, and for students who are already able to read music I modify our lesson materials to reflect this. In 2014, I began teaching students privately. I taught multiple students of different ages, with a range from early childhood to late adulthood. Most of my students were beginners, and we worked together for over a year. By the end of our time together, they were able to play fairly advanced music for the time they had been playing, such as "La Folia" by Corelli and "Jesu, the Joy of Man's Desiring" by Bach. I focus on posture, theory, and intonation, and once these basics are mastered, the sky's the limit! I've taught a variety of classical music, fiddle music, popular and Disney music, even rock and roll. The thing to remember is that every musical experience will teach a student something, so once we have the basics down, students really get to choose their music that they want to play. Although I have a classically trained background, I understand that some students don't respond well to the traditional" Suzuki style learning. So, I like to assess a student before recommending books and or repertoire for them or their parents to purchase. I plan unique lesson plans for each student based on several determining factors including level of playing, age, learning curves, learning styles, what their goals for lessons are, and how much practice time they want to commit to per week (which is usually a different number to students than it is to parents). If my student has a more "just for fun" attitude, the lesson will inevitably be a more light hearted feel.
