I understand that it is a challenge for students to go home and practice, so I address this by setting goals for the student. I want the student to leave the lesson feeling proud of what they accomplished and motivated to continue learning. Formal training began in junior high with the saxophone which continued through high school and my college years at Fairleigh Dickinson University. I became interested in the guitar and played with many groups and ensambles. Then became interested in the violin and fell in love with it. My teaching style is based off of my experiences with 10+ teachers I worked with in my history of violin playing (25 years!). I had a lot of fabulous teachers in my life, but the ones I remember and am truly grateful for are the ones who inspired me to be a better musician and ones who taught me how to teach myself. For beginning students, I typically start with the Piano Adventures series. I learned from those books and they provide a well-rounded foundation of technique, lesson material, and performance material. That series also begins teaching basic music theory from the start. Piano Adventures is also great for visual learners- with pictures and diagrams to help understand the concepts in the lessons. My goal is to start students with strong technique and a practice plan. For the past 20 years, I've studied and performed with keyboards, guitars and woodwind instruments while exploring a very wide variety of music ranging from classical and rock to jazz and avant-garde. Expanding and sharing that knowledge with other people in a helpful and friendly manner is something that I consummately enjoy- especially if they're beginning where I once was. Music has been with me since the beginning - my Mother taught Ballet while she was pregnant with me, and at a few months old my parents played tapes of Beethoven, Bach, and Tchaikovsky. At age 3, I began music classes and have not stopped since then. My career as a musician started at the Rockford Music Academy, branching onto many orchestras and camps and wonderful performances. To name a few, I played in the Rockford Youth Symphony Orchestra throughout my high school years, attended the Music Academy of Rockford for 15 years, was selected to perform with The Piano Guys in 2016, and attended many years at Brian Wicklunds Fiddle Camp (my favorite style to play as youll come to know).
