I first began teaching as an undergraduate college student in 2002. One of my childhood piano teachers invited me to teach violin, viola, and cello in her studio of primarily piano students. A short time later, after being hired as an accompanist at a local string studio, I was hired as a string teacher within the studio, where I taught for several years. I then took over their classes and received feedback and guidance from them. Since moving to Chicago in 2017, I have worked with a music school and taught private lessons as well as group lessons in Chicago Public Schools. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. My top priority in teaching violin is for my students to develop a love for music. This includes tailoring my teaching style dependent on the student's learning style. Typically, I like to begin my lessons with developing musical foundations (which includes scales, rhythm, and different bow and finger exercises). Then, I choose a piece that challenges the student in some artistic capacity. Nothing is more rewarding than when my students leave the lesson more motivated than when they came. I understand that it is a challenge for students to go home and practice, so I address this by setting goals for the student. I want the student to leave the lesson feeling proud of what they accomplished and motivated to continue learning. I want them to be able to apply the techniques they learn in music to other areas of study so that they can explore and be curious about everything. Read More
