I usually begin with the Suzuki method for both children and adults, and once the student has a good command of fundamental violin technique, we progress in the style of the student's primary interest. I am very open to teaching a variety of styles, and can put together a detailed lesson plan for any direction the student may choose. In the event that the student is primarily focused on areas other than the classical repertoire, I definitely begin with Mark O'Connor's violin method that is specifically designed for students interested in traditional folk and fiddle music. My fourteen years as a strings teacher has included both private lessons and public school settings. Many of his students have gone on to be involved in regional orchestras, Houston Youth Symphony, and university orchestras. Depending on students age and ability, I use different kind of methods. For students that are new to music I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, this book is really good to start to learn about music and the instrument, and then Suzuki method for repertoire. For more advanced students I like to set learning steps, that way my students can achieve goals quickly and feel more engaging to practice. Read More

Those who are new in playing the violin/viola for the first time, I would start addressing how to care and properly hold their instrument and get them familiarize with the essential elements boors book which has simple exercises and fun modern music at the same time, so the student can learn and also have fun! Those who have a little bit more experience than a beginner in playing the violin or viola, I would ask them to play a solo piece and a scale so I can start analyzing and start working in technique such as bow usage, bow hold word, hand frame, intonation, etc. Read More
