For beginning students I start with an Alfred's beginning drum method to help with reading. We also start on the basic understanding of musical concepts such as tempo, dynamics and so on. While reading is important I do also include learning by wrote or by ear. A good ear is just as important as good reading skills for the complete musician. I always include music that the student is interested in to keep the lessons fun and engaging! Read More

I have been teaching students of all ages since 2010. I have been teaching both in my home studio and at the students home, I have also taught in Public Schools and in Music stores. My goal as a teacher is to get students excited about music and have them looking forward to our lessons together and inspire them to learn more and practice. The Trumpet is my main instrument but as a certified Music Educator I'm comfortable and highly qualified to teach many different instruments such as all of the Brass Instruments ( Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, French horn, Euphonium, Flugelhorn etc) and all of the Reed instruments (Clarinet, Saxophone and Flute) as well as Piano and Voice. My teaching experience starts even while I was in high school. I would volunteer to help the middle school band students to coach them and get them ready for competitions. I also volunteered with the Seattle Music Partners where we went into schools that lost their music program and we taught students after school as their only means of connection to this art in schools. While in college I was a co-coordinator and participant in a Music Mentor Program where we took college students and matched them with students from the local middle school in Oberlin. Read More

In order for my students to achieve their full musical potential, I am aware that each student is different in regards to learning. To achieve this, I spend a lot of time getting to know the student and how the learn best so I can accurately plan and prepare lessons, objectives, and goals to fit the needs of each individual pupil. From there, I facilitate and incorporate various methods of music teaching into my lessons and curriculum. Read More

My first objective when meeting any new student is to figure out what their strengths and weaknesses are, and what their overall goal in music is; whether it’s learning a new piece, playing jazz, playing for fun, getting first chair or making it into an ensemble. Being a classically trained trumpet player, I have come across nearly every issue and technical exercise imaginable. For all my students, I want to make sure that they are playing the trumpet correctly physically and not forming any bad habits. Read More

It also gives some tips as I would give such as buzzing the mouthpiece a while before playing. Also when warming up, playing some long tones which is an excellent way of building up your embouchure. Each exercise is basically giving you a little bit of Music Theory as it’s teaching you how to play and understand whole notes, half notes, quarter notes and so on. So now the student can see how these notes are used and related to an actual piece of music. Read More
