If you would like some food for thought from your potential music mentor, I would say this for starters; if you want to strengthen your bond between you and your instrument, and wield it effectively, you have to get in the mindset first. Practice regularly, listen to other musicians that play the same instrument as you, listen to musicians that don't play the same instrument, talk with other musicians, share ideas, live in a world where you eat, sleep, breath, and love music, and be friendly and open minded. The ultimate goal that I have for my students is to see that they have the same passion for music that I found when I was at my beginning. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a student revel in their own personal relationship with music, but to share their love of music, this is paramount. Music is a learned skill, and nothing in life worth doing comes automatic. Pacing and acknowledgements of good work tend to encourage students to continue their hard work. Read More

I get a thrill when I can see one of my student's develop a passion for music. It is fulfilling to see them understand the fundamentals of jazz and to know where the music comes from. I like to give a brief history of the style and song to develop an emotional connection with the music being played. This allows the student to put feeling into the song rather than playing notes on a page. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet Trombone Euphonium French Horn Tuba Music
For older students, especially high schoolers, I like to use a blue book called Foundations for Superior Performance (Warm-Ups and Technique for Band) by Richard Williams and Jeff King as the techniques in that book are more suited for what a high school-level player should be expected to play. As for adults, I recommend Brass Gym as well as books from made by university professors and other professional instrumentalists. Moving beyond warm-ups and technique mastery, I like to find different solos that appropriately challenge and help hone on a skill that my student is focusing on working on. Read More
