I only had one student thus far in my teaching career but i can truly say that i taught him so much during our experience together. The best part about teaching a student, and i'm going to restate what i said earlier, is that both grow in the process. It only took me a year to teach that little kid how to play properly. I like to be flexible to the students needs and learning style. Ive used many method books often going off what the student is already working on for band or in school. If the student is more advanced I will assign method books such as the Arbans, Clarke, and Charlier books. I also like to incorporate music the student is interested in and wants to learn. I use a variety of methods for my teaching style. I usually have a few method books that I bring to a first lesson, and after meeting the student I will decide on the best one. Once the student has progressed and shows some motivation to be slightly challenged, I'll introduce "popular" music so that the student feels a sense of accomplishment! I have been teaching Prek- 8th Grade general music, choir, drama and instrumental lessons for the past 5 years. My primary instrument is trumpet and I have played in a variety of bands and sung in a variety of choruses of the years. For my beginning students I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Then we move to the "Arban" book and eventually start working on solo rep. Another thing I like to implement is the breathing gym, which not only helps as a musician but can also assure you having clear lungs! I usually try to do fun things for example if my student is young I ask them whats their favorite pop song and I usually arrange it or find an arrangement and spend a lesson doing that, or even teaching them to learn it by ear.
