For beginning students I start with an Alfred's beginning drum method to help with reading. We also start on the basic understanding of musical concepts such as tempo, dynamics and so on.  While reading is important I do also include learning by wrote or by ear.  A good ear is just as important as good reading skills for the complete musician.  I always include music that the student is interested in to keep the lessons fun and engaging! I find immense joy in seeing a student discover something new about their instrument. As someone who has taught people with all sorts of learning capacities, I've found that there is no one who can't be motivated through proper goal-setting and progression marking. As part of this, I always recommend a student records their lessons so they can have a consistent marker to show how far they've come. I am a huge believer in teaching and learning with a growth mindset. Read More
