Here are the things that I want to impart to my piano students in their first 10 weeks of lessons: That I love music and I love teaching them That music lessons are creative and exploratory That creating music is fun and easy That music can tell stories That music is more than pushing down keys That music is art and involves dynamics, speed, feeling, etc. That singing and moving to music is just a part of how we do things in music education That playing the piano the right way (ie. with the right technique) is really important The importance of understanding, feeling and moving to meter (duple/triple) The concept of home, tonic/dominant tonalities and being able to hear and create bass lines That music is made up of chords, patterns, and melodies That they can transpose music into different keys I use Alfred Piano Method, it also dives into intervallic reading, as described above. I vary my approach and I can go between different methods so that I can create a specific one for the student. I have studied and thought more classical methods like Arban, Clarke and Claude Gordon just to name a few. But also I believe in really using creativity to teach and learn. So I developed methods that include all kinds of different and new exercises for every level of the student. Read More

I've had a number of devoted teachers and being in New York there's always a chance to learn something new by simply saying hello to a musician. I look at teaching as sharing information enthusiastically and giving a student a chance to check in about issues they're dealing with relating to the instrument, music in general, and psychology of performance. I'm a student of the directions I was nudged towards by several key teachers. Read More

I consider myself to be an adaptable teacher. Every student learns in a different way, and this necessitates a need to adapt and find different ways to teach each student. I am a very firm believer in fundamentals; that is to say, every student needs a solid foundation before moving on to more complex ideas. We need to walk first before we can run! While these fundamentals are being taught, relevant music will be introduced in order to incorporate the basic skills being worked on. Read More

I teach strong instrumental fundamentals, along with music theory comprehension, sight-reading, and ear training. I also like to emphasize ensemble playing using instrumental duets. I use appropriate level texts based on the student's experience first and age level second but always teach from what will make either younger students or adults feel comfortable. Fun is a must in one's progression but focus is key to success. I've helped students win concerto and ensemble awards and have also brought adults into the professional-level playing world through lessons. Read More

Seeing a student excel and reach their goals is the most rewarding experience a teacher can have. Everyone works at a different speed, and I expect each student to do the best they can do. I do not believe in forcing a "one size fits all" teaching method on every student. Each student has different goals, and I focus on reaching those goals at a pace that will challenge the student without feeling impossible or insurmountable. Read More
