If the student is enthusiastic and driven, the rest falls into place naturally. That's the way it's been for the students I've taught, and the way it began for myself. In the first lesson, I assess the student's current ability and also discuss the student's personal goals and interests in music. Based on this information, I create a daily fundamentals routine for the student to use to improve the basic building blocks of playing a musical instrument. I also allow students to bring in music that interests them from solo material and pieces of music from band class. Every student has a hunger for music, a hunger to progress and become more experienced and proficient; my job is to teach a student how to feed that hunger. Each student has a different drive and different goals, therefore, each students' lesson is unique! I encourage students to set their own goals in order to challenge, and motivate themselves.
