Aquiles Navarro is a New York-based trumpeter, composer and DJ of Panamanian heritage. He derives his sounds from folkloric music, salsa, and reggae. This eclectic music background, based on his upbringing in Panama has led him to collaborate with folkloric musicians, dancers, visual artists, actors, and poets. He studied in Panama with tenor player Carlos Garnett and trumpeter Victor “Vitin” Paz. After moving to the US, he received a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance at the New England Conservatory, and a Master’s degree from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami where he studied with trumpeter Brian Lynch. For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has a grasp on the fundamentals of performance, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital or NYSSMA solo. After the student moves on from basic method books, I introduce more trombone-specific books such as Arban's Trombone Method Book and Rochut's Melodious Etudes for trombone. I started teaching privately in college at Florida State University, and was even asked to teach for the F.S.U. summer jazz camp as the middle school instructor for their big band. I also taught trombone masterclasses as well as a small group. In New York I've taught privately for 5 years, and have also had the opportunity to work with elementary schools in the city doing jazz presentations through my Master's degree program at Manhattan School of Music. I graduated from the Manhattan School of Music Precollege in the spring of 2019 where I held the role of principal trombone in the orchestra.
