For beginners, I start by focusing on developing a good sound and ensuring that the student knows what a good sound is and what it is not. Air is the foundation of a good sound so, in my introductory lessons, I focus heavily on breathing and air support. This is a foundation that is continued throughout the time the student continues to take lessons. I then begin to work with the student on fundamentals such as articulation, slide control, intonation, etc. Read More

I started teaching music in 2011. I was hired by Fletcher Academy, a private boarding academy, to teach concert band class for the high school and the elementary school as well as music classes for other area private grade schools. My student's quickly found out that I am in love with concert band! I have taught piano, trumpet, euphonium, french horn, trombone, and percussion lessons for 8 years. I encourage consistent practice and exploration of music that the student is interested in. Read More

My teaching philosophy revolved around the idea that music should be fun and engaging. While many teachers start their students off by learning how to read music, I like to begin with actually playing and familiarizing yourself with the instrument and later translating that information to written music notation. In your first lesson, we will play the instrument and learn a simple tune based on your skill level. I like to take into account the students music preference and learn what specifically they want to get out of private lessons. Read More

My teaching experience has been a part of my life for over 12 years starting with my leadership in my high school band specifically with brass instruments. My experience has always been with beginners and earlier musicians, but my tenure in Avery County has given me more experience with intermediate and advanced players that have auditioned and performed in All-District and other Honors Bands throughout North Carolina.
