I taught elementary music for twenty plus years in the public school system (band, chorus, and classroom music). Additionally, I have taught private music lessons, traveling to my students’ homes and in my studio. I find being a teacher very rewarding because by imparting my musical knowledge, background, and experiences to my students, I can encourage and instill in them the same love of music that I was so fortunate to acquire. Most teachers use a Hal Leonard beginning book. Essential Elements (EE) is popular, as well as Accent on Achievement. I'll be using EE for beginners. Instruments: Piano, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, French Horn
For beginning piano students, I started with the Piano Adventures Series unless they show a higher than usual natural ability. If the student is learning the trumpet or another brass instrument, we begin with Standards of Excellence by Bruce Pearson. Read More
Instruments: Trombone
My teaching style is to get the student engaged during the lesson. I want the student to have fun and develop a true passion and understanding for music and the instrument. This is one of the reasons why the musical repertoire chosen is based on the students musical preferences rather than only playing generic tunes from the method book. It is my belief that if students can take the fundamentals they learn and apply it by playing music that is actually fun and enjoyable for them, it makes the experience of lessons more effective. My teaching career began in college. I taught trombone lessons and was an instructor for the Hampton University Band Camp. In 2009 I became a graduate assistant at Central Michigan University. I also taught at an elementary school while I was in graduate school. After college I moved to North Carolina and became a band director on the middle school and high school level. My strongest skill is composition and arranging. My works have been played on the middle school, high school, collegiate, and professional level. This skill set includes jazz, popular music, classical, gospel, small ensembles, and large ensembles. Read More
