Overview:
I started studying music at a very early age. When I was four years old, I started taking organ lessons, followed by piano when I was 7 years old. During elementary school, I started playing the clarinet. In middle school, I started playing the oboe. During high school, I learned the english horn and alto saxophone. I was very fortunate to grow up in a musical family as my father was a musician and music teacher. My father even had a music studio in the house. I would watch my father’s band rehearse and listen to many of his music students’ lessons. I was always exposed to top musicians, as my family attended many concerts. I especially enjoyed meeting the musicians in the bands, since my Dad was their colleague. As a result, I always studied with esteemed music teachers. I attended and obtained both of my degrees from top rated, prestigious universities. Since I was in elementary school, I always wanted to be a musician and a music teacher. I dreamed of opening my own studio one day as my father did.
EXPERIENCE
I taught elementary music for twenty plus years in the public school system (band, chorus, and classroom music). Additionally, I have taught private music lessons, traveling to my students’ homes and in my studio. I find being a teacher very rewarding because by imparting my musical knowledge, background, and experiences to my students, I can encourage and instill in them the same love of music that I was so fortunate to acquire. As a professional musician, I enjoy seeing the joy and excitement on my students’ faces as they learn a musical selection and then can play it successfully. I want my students to feel the same exhilaration that I feel after a successful performance.
METHODS USED
Since each student learns differently, I utilize a variety of teaching methods. Some students are auditory learners. Some students are visual learners. Some students learn better when several method books are used in correlation with each other. No matter what instrument I am teaching to a student, due to my years of experience, I have an extensive library of materials, methods, and literature that I can implement into my lessons. As a current educator and musician I also am constantly acquiring new ideas and materials, as well.
LESSON STYLE
I enjoy teaching all ages from the very beginning student to the more advanced students and can adapt my teaching methods accordingly. I feel each student learns differently and that we are all individuals with different personalities and learning styles. I enjoy the challenges of creating and implementing various teaching techniques so as to accommodate their individuality and so each student will become successful at mastering their instrument. I feel music is an expressive art and students learn and perform better in a relaxed, but structured atmosphere.
