My wonderful mother started me in piano lessons when I was 5 years old. She never dreamed that I would go on to get a degree in music during those first years of lessons. I studied piano under Dr. John Cobb, who holds a Doctorate in Piano Performance from Julliard. I continued piano lessons for 13 years, but when I started college, I decided to major in trumpet. My teaching experience has been a part of my life for over 12 years starting with my leadership in my high school band specifically with brass instruments. I continued to pursue music education in college where I developed varied techniques and approaches to a variety of instruments through my time spent with some great teachers that identified my challenges and helped me to overcome them. My experience has always been with beginners and earlier musicians, but my tenure in Avery County has given me more experience with intermediate and advanced players that have auditioned and performed in All-District and other Honors Bands throughout North Carolina. My teaching style is to get the student engaged during the lesson. I want the student to have fun and develop a true passion and understanding for music and the instrument. This is one of the reasons why the musical repertoire chosen is based on the students musical preferences rather than only playing generic tunes from the method book. It is my belief that if students can take the fundamentals they learn and apply it by playing music that is actually fun and enjoyable for them, it makes the experience of lessons more effective. The most important thing to me is to make sure my students love what they do. So I like to make sure that I'm always challenging them but never pushing them too hard, helping them get better at their own pace. At the end of each lesson I like to send students with a sheet having their required and suggested practice materials for the next lesson. Obviously, sometimes it may seem like a lot of work, but it isn't expected to be perfect at every lesson! Read More
