For beginning string student's, I use Essential Elements for Strings and Schroeder method books. Once the student has grasped the basic fundamentals and note reading, I begin to introduce solo repertoire from the Suzuki String method. Along with technical studies and solo repertoire, the student will learn scales ranging from one to four octaves. For beginning piano student's, I use the Bastein Piano series. I also encourage students to practice vocal-instrumental coordination when establishing the concepts of musical expression within structures. I adopt some ear training for younger students as they develop a sense of pitch and theoretical knowledge for adults who learn better with checkpoints. Throughout my years as a student I have worked with some teachers that have been very verbally supportive and others that firmly believed in the "tough love" strategy. Many students, myself included, seem to work better inside and outside of lessons when our hard work is acknowledged and praised by the instructor. For this to work one must set achievable goals for the student. I ask each student to bring a notebook where I can write down their assignments for the coming week. Read More
