In time, if a student is showing a particular interest in continuing in music I will begin teaching theory skills and more difficult musical assignments. For non-beginner students I will address more advanced matters of technique and musicality while also teaching music theory principals. My own work in the field of music theory has helped my playing and understanding of music immensely and I feel that any student, whether or not they intend to pursue music as a career, will benefit from understanding the WHY behind things we teach. I always start a lesson with a new student by assessing their current skill level. If the student already has a certain curriculum they are working on, I usually have them pick up from where they left off so I can see where we're at. Taking things into consideration like intonation, posture, dynamics, form etc., I either assign a new curriculum or continue on. Generally, my students have a varying ratio of technique/scale study to work on the foundations, an etude/short piece study to help connect musical ideas and teach expression, and a solo piece that is prepared over a long period of time, most likely for a future recital.
