I believe that the secret to becoming a talented musician is to love making music. I design my lessons around the needs and goals of the students, striving to have fun along the way. I understand and want my students to realize that making mistakes is a huge part of how we learn. My students and I have fun working through the challenges they face as they strive to become better every day. Read More

I do my best to foster a warm and safe environment with all of my students. In all of my first lessons, I establish rules that explain that we must treat our lesson space, our instruments, and each other with respect. I cater each lesson to each student; every person is different, therefore every lesson must be different. During each lesson, we set realistic yet challenging goals for the next upcoming lessons. I try to get my students to develop a passion for music. My style and curriculum tend to have my students progressing quickly, but attention to detail is very important to me as well as a great sound on the instrument. I approach teaching in a way that encourages students to learn at a pace that's comfortable for them. Since the lessons are one -on-one, there is no need to keep up with a herd like you're in school. The first lesson is always a trial lesson, in it I attempt to access where the student is musically. I also use the time to find out what the student's musical goals are . We look at things like reading, theory, dexterity on the instrument. If the student plays a wind instrument we look at things like embouchure and breathing. Once I have gotten a good idea as to the student's skill level and have spoken to the student about their musical goals and interests. Read More

My style of teaching also varies greatly with each individual. Some students have specific music from school or from outside music groups that they want to learn and also need to learn the skills to be able to play that particular music. Other students come with a desire just to improve their current abilities, and we find ways to do that by choosing inspiring music together. Sometimes playing duets is a great way to do that, and when its not possible to play together in real time I make recordings that the student can enjoy playing with. Read More
