I ask all of my students to be prepared for their lessons with a notebook and pencil for lesson notes and assignments. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. I believe in writing down notes that help students understand what they are learning, exactly what students should practice, and setting goals for their practice and overall progress. Read More

I have studied several approaches to teaching including Orff, Montessori, and Suzuki. I love to seek out new ways to effectively instruct my students. In music learning, I believe that listening is of utmost importance. One must internalize and interact with the music they hear so that they may develop a concept for what they would like to play. From there, students work with me to allow their musical voice to come through their instrument. Read More

The emphasis for these lessons is on pouring your soul into some practical excercises that are applicable to the stage, whether it’s a jazz ensemble, concert band, funk band, wedding group, solo project. What the student puts in, they will receive in return. The exercises will focus largely on tone production (your personality or voice on the horn) and transcription of ideas (to develop real musical vocabulary). With these tools, the sax becomes a vehicle for self expression and an outlet for the audience, things so vital in these current times of turmoil and self doubt. Read More

I am an upbeat energetic teacher who loves music and loves teaching. I have played saxophone since I was 8 years old, and I am now in my late 50's. I play professionally for many local Denver bands including jazz, blues, pop, contemporary, and have my own music business to play events at weddings, parties etc. I have traveled The Noreweign Cruise ships twice on jazz cruises and had the opportunity to play with the famous bassist Rufus Reed and saxophonist Lou Donaldson. My method varies for every student but I have a very specific plan for each level of experience. Beginners would focus on essential elements books and beginner packets that cover basics and also have rewarding solo pieces. More advanced students would focus on scales and long tones with etudes for fundamentals and repertoire for solo playing and performances. Of course, anyone wanting to focus on jazz or certain styles of playing and older players can decide what they want to do and I will guide them as we go. Read More
