I attended Walt Whitman High School and was a member of its award winning Jazz Ensemble as a Tenor Saxophonist. Once my student has a working knowledge of the fundamentals, I introduce music that will build confidence and keep the student's interest. Although I am using a method book, it is just a guide. Along the way, I may supplement the book with other exercises to work on specific techniques. Once a good foundation is established, I like to move into solo and ensemble repertoire to develop lyricism and expression. For beginning students I like to start with the same book I learned; Essential elements by Hal Leonard. This book comes with a play along that serves as stimuli to the young ear. A compliment and more flute oriented book is Flute 101-103 Which ranges from beginners to medium-advanced students. Otherwise, I will start with the beginning Rubank method book, and move through books containing etudes and exercises of increasing difficulty.
