My teaching method is based primarily on helping my students develop the skills needed to understand the language of music so that then they can create performances that are compelling and fulfilling to both the audience and themselves. I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach, and prefer to tailor my methods to the needs and goals of the student. I see what ability level the student is at and then decide which method books would be most helpful.I will supplement with my own material when appropriate.For beginning students who are younger,I like Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and Alfred,among others.For adults I try and find out what the student is interested in accomplishing and tailor the lessons accordingly.I like to give each student a good backing of music theory and an exposure to a wide variety of styles.I want to have each student be open to all types of music. I cater lessons to YOUR needs and goals. I am not invested in there being a "right" technique of any kind. Together we will create a custom approach so that you will love the experience of playing the music you love.  I will share fun and efficient ways to practice so that you get immediate results. If desired, I also guarantee you will be playing a blues and improvising within a maximum of 6 weeks as long as you practice at least 10 minutes, three times a week.  You will have the option of playing along with recordings minus your part so that you can experience the joy of ensemble playing early on in the safety of your own home. I love creating small ensemble groups of students at similar levels and arranging concerts at regular intervals. To help students become familiar with rhythms, I occasionally use clapping exercises and even collaborate with them to create a song together. When I teach music, I make sure to emphasize sustainability. It's important to me that my students understand how to take care of their instruments, use resources efficiently, and appreciate the natural world that inspires music. I take the time to get to know the student and which methods would best benefit and keep the spark ignited. For standard piano lessons, Bastien and Faber methods are always a hit with both children and adults. For Saxophone lessons I use the "Standard of Excellence" book that most school bands use. I have also written a lesson book of my own that I use pages from. If the student would prefer presenting their favorite records/songs and learning the styles and sounds that they hear, we can go down that road! Read More
