Every student is a snowflake, meaning everyone has their own unique preferences and dislikes. I customize my teaching style depending on the student and allow them to progress at their own pace. I like to first introduce students to basics and learn their tastes so I can modify their teaching regimen. I assign students "homework" or practice songs each week to ensure they are maintaining their routine, and if they deviate from this for some reason for more than two weeks, I immediately tune my teaching style to best motivate my students to want to practice. This means in addition to talking about technique, we will discuss theory and history related to the instrument and repertoire (depending on level of the student) as well as healthy and productive practice habits. I'm trying to put each student in touch with their inner creative. Everyone learns at a different pace and my approach is to teach something to mastery level rather than fill a quota. Inspiration and the joy of playing is first and foremost with my approach. While studying at Campbell, Joshua served as the Principle Bassoonist in the Cape Fear Symphony and Principle Trombone in the Campbell University Wind Ensemble. He was also a member of the Campbell University Percussion Ensemble, Campbell University Guitar Ensemble, Campbell University Jazz Band, Campbell University Pep Band (playing Mellophone), and served as a Student Conductor and Student Composer/Arranger for multiple Campbell and community ensembles. The student will lean to incorporate the technical and artistic to understand piano music especially can elicit different feelings. I take what the student is interested in music wise in order as a teaching tool.
