I enjoy tailoring my lesson plans and materials for each individual student. For beginning students, a like to start with a beginning method book tailored to the student's interests. I find that learning and memorizing songs and simple repertoire is an effective way for beginning and intermediate students to advance, and that following students interest goes a long way for the learning process! I like to also offer repertoire options that are among the most famous and well known for the instrument. Read More

As a composer, Erik writes music centered around emotional storytelling and immersive musical journeys. This philosophy carries into his teaching, where students are encouraged not only to learn their instrument but also to understand how music communicates feeling, character, and narrative. Whether students are preparing for performances, auditions, school ensembles, or learning music for personal enjoyment, Erik strives to create a supportive environment where students grow both musically and personally. First and foremost, learning any musical instrument should be a fun experience. With this in mind, each person's lesson is subjective and progresses according to the student's learning style; a beginning 5 yr old student's lesson will look much different that a beginning 14 yr old student's lesson. Each student will learn repertoire from a lesson book, solo repertoire and anything else that they may express interest in. As a student progresses, their repertoire will naturally become more challenging . Read More

When I took piano lessons, my teacher simultaneously taught John Thompson, John Schaum, and Alfred's Basic piano courses, which was a bit overwhelming! For children in particular, I believe that John Thompson does the most effective job of working from the fundamentals up to the classics. That said, private lessons are very personal, and I'm happy to work with any student to find the repertoire that is most engaging to them. Read More

My passion is German opera and art song, but my roots are in choral music. When I am not gigging or teaching, I am singing beautiful choral music at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. This summer, I will have the opportunity to sing choral music at St. Read More

Great music lessons are a mix of solid technique building and fun application of those skills. I always spend the first few lessons getting the student familiar with the basic technique of the instrument, and then quickly move on to duets, improvising, sight reading, solos, etc. that tie in with the current technique studies. Music can also be heard or read, so I try to strike a balance between reading music/theory and learning/improvising by ear. Read More
