For beginners, I generally stick with the Faber Method books, as I enjoy their unity of music theory and practical application more than other method series. It is my goal to remove students from methods as soon as possible- somewhere around early intermediate skill level, so that we may engage with more meaningful repertoire from the 'greats', as well as give the students the tools to take agency over their own repertoire choices, including transcriptions of popular media. There are several different method books that I like to use with my students based on age, knowledge/experience, and of course if the method book they use is something they will enjoy; it's very difficult if a student doesn't like the book they're using so I try to give them options. For beginners, I like to use John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course or the Schuam method books. For additional practice and work, I like to use Schaum's Fingerpower and have the student write out the notes then recite them aloud while playing the exercise. Read More

I am passionate about music and enjoy sharing that passion with others. In 2018, I graduated from the University of Dayton with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy and minor in Psychology. I am currently a full time music therapist at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, Main Campus. I love working as a music therapist, but I also enjoy teaching music lessons. I have been playing classical piano for about 15 years and acoustic guitar for about 5 years. Read More

Similar to what is written above I prefer an approach that is rooted in the fundamentals. It is my belief that learning these well can serve a student later on when the music starts to become more difficult. Most students I have that have learned in this way tend to not get overwhelmed and are able to transition to higher levels of playing more easily. One of my favorite quotes is "The advanced level is mastery of the basics" which I have found to be true. Read More

I certainly have adopted the teaching styles of my previous and current instructors, each bringing a unique approach to teaching an instrument. Patience and understand is crucial with any students, and there needs to be a lot of fun and excitement within a lesson, otherwise, what is the point? Now, fun and excitement must also be met with serious practice time and great concentration during a lesson. My objective is to create a comfortable environment fertile for learning, while at the same time having my students know there are skills to refine and concepts to solidify. Read More

As an adult, I have taken pedagogy with the head of the pedagogy department at Olivet Nazarene University, Piano from Dr. Karen Ball, flute from Gary Schocker, and voice lessons from members of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Always looking to improve myself through individual study, I also get excited when I learn things from my students. Music is such an exciting field to be involved in and my teaching studio reflects that - I teach many different styles, curriculums, and provide many opportunities for sharing our music outside the studio. I began teaching back in my sophomore year of high school when one of my friends wanted to learn how to play the piano. I gave them half hour lessons once a week and tailored my teaching to fit what techniques they wanted to learn. After that, I began branching out and teaching other friends, and eventually found myself helping out the middle school bands during my study hall. Now that I am in college, my own playing has improved and I have found new ways to connect and teach students whether that be in person, or by using technology such as skype. Read More
