I normally start out with the Faber and Faber Piano Adventures methods books for the piano students. This includes a lesson book and a theory book. The lesson book will teach the student the physical skill of playing piano by presenting them with leveled songs to learn. The theory book will focus more on the mechanics of music and playing and require some written work. Students want to learn the piano for a variety of reasons. Some arent really sure they want to learn at all, but mom wants them to give it a shot! Others just want to learn that song on the radio! All are fine reasons to learn, and each deserves a personal approach. For very young students just learning the basics, structure provides direction and comfort, so Id recommend jumping into a beginners curriculum such as by Alfred or Hal Leonard and going from there. Fundamentals are key. For all ages and all instruments, you will be working on scales, chord progressions, transposition and reading of music for piano; scales, lip slurs, technical etudes, long tones, transposition and reading of music for trumpet; and scales, slurs, technical studies, transposition and reading of music for flute. For all instruments, there will be one key book that will cover everything you need to know. If you work with me on a longer term, getting the book would not be a bad idea so you can practice at home, although it is not required by me. Read More
