I love watching my students develop a passion for music! I encourage students to practice regularly and to persevere toward specific goals. It is my philosophy that taking lessons alone will not develop the musicians skills, but through consistent practice, perseverance, and patience, a student will be able to see real progress and eventually achieve their goals. No dream is achieved overnight! Some of my favorite moments during my four years of teaching thus far have been seeing my students achieve their goals, whether they are landing the lead role in a musical, being accepted into the top choir at their school, receiving high marks at contests, or something as simple as performing in their first recital, having a break-through moment with a new technique during lessons, or memorizing their first foreign-language piece. My approach to teaching is based on a large amount of communication between the students, the parents, and I. I love to know what my students are thinking in order to enhance what they are looking for in musicianship. I believe that musicians should be allowed to play and learn freely, however, the foundation given by learning jazz theory, gives any musicianship a bigger dynamic of playing for whatever genre they specifically like to play. Premieres of my works have also been made by the locally-based Balance Campaign and Strata Trio. I believe the role of an artist goes hand-in-hand with the role of an educator: both have a strong sense of moral responsibility. When at our best we foster alternative ways of thinking, problem solving, and communicating with others. I believe that art and education are never a matter of excess. The ability to imagine and create is nothing less than paramount in giving future generations ways to cope, communicate, and address this worlds age-old problems. Read More

Nothing is more enjoyable than seeing a music student climb the learning curve and self recognize and appreciate their progress other than, perhaps watching their passion grow over the long term as they successfully step into the performance phase and play a well practiced piece for their friends, family, peers, or others. Each student's lesson selection plan is always a collaborative agreement between the instructor and learner as well as the practice plan in terms of both frequency and repetition pattern. Read More

For beginners who are children, I typically use Faber and Faber's Piano Adventures. One of my biggest goals while teaching is to provide my students with a well-rounded music education. From my experience, the Piano Adventures series aligns well this goal while providing engaging, fun material for children. After completing a series of method books, I start to focus on classical repertoire. While I believe classical repertoire is the best way to build piano technique, musicianship, and musical knowledge, I love including other genres depending on the student's interest. Read More

I've been playing piano since I was four years old and my biggest goals for my students are for them to become confident and excited about music, whether they want to join a band, accompany choirs, perform, or just play for fun. I have taught all ages and firmly believe in the lifelong benefits of music lessons. I have experience in several musical venues including accompaniment, solo performance, group performance, church service, and musical theater and play everything from 80's rock standards to classical pieces.
