The first lesson I will assess the students playing to get to know them and their goals so we can get started right away. For beginners we'll be focusing heavily on Syncopation and Stick Control, two excellent books. When the student has a grasp on the basics we will work on dynamic control, limb independence, sense of time and ear training. I taught students for about 2 years, and once I graduated High School, I moved to Flagstaff to get my degree. I teach out of several methods, depending on the desires and needs of each individual student. I do make sure all students have a basic understanding of note reading, rhythm, chord building, right hand techniques and various styles. We learn to strum, play arpeggios and improvise...everything the student needs to feel comfortable playing and performing. For beginning students, I am willing to work with them on the book they are using in school band. I also like to use other flute technique books, such as Rubank, Melodious etudes, and flute duets as well. When the student has developed a confident tone and technique, I will introduce solo repertoire that is at a comfortable level for the student, as well as eventuall getting the student to learn the beauty of collaborating with a pianist or other form of accompanist.
