In my lessons I use my own materials that I have composed and compiled in the course of 32 years, as well as books that I found in Europe and later in the United States. There are some American educational series that I also like to use. Sometimes my students as me to work on their school band music, in this case we are using the band method books. I am always happy to work with very beginners to very advanced and professional. Read More

I'm a career string quartet musician who loves both performing and teaching. I graduated with a Master of Music degree from McGill University in Viola Performance. I've been lucky to have many amazing opportunities so far: I've performed in Carnegie Hall as a member of the New York String Orchestra Seminar; in Yokohama and Tokyo, Japan; and in Salzburg, Austria (the birthplace of Mozart!) as a member of the Milton String Quartet. Teaching recorder at age 15 (seriously...) I have been teaching here in the NYC area since the mid ninties. When I was a student at MSM the head of tutoring noticed me helping students and signed me up with a tutoring service that led to a position in a few schools and finally put me in the faculty of MSM pre colloege division. In addition I have between 20 to 30 private students every year. Read More

Seeing a student transform from a beginner to a well rounded musician is one of many joys of teaching. I break my lessons into 3 segments;1) required work on fundamental 2) assigned material for overall musical development 3) music that the student has selected of his or her desired interest. With the proper balance, students remain engaged, and excited about practicing and anticpating their next lesson. Read More

I have worked with many students on different levels. I teach beginners how to hold and tune guitars and then how to play basic melodies. I believe that it is important to jump right in and start playing, that was how I learned. Students at this beginner level will learn how to play melodies on 1 string. Later as they progress I start to show them basic chords. For the intermediate level students they learn how to play scales and chords based on the CAGED method. Read More

This pedagogy uses the Suzuki repertoire but can also be used with other books. The Suzuki (Japanese) method is one of the most popular in the US. This method establishes strong musical and technical fundamentals. Other methods lead to similar results and can be just as enjoyable and interesting. Some examples are Robert Trorys (British) books or The Sassmannhaus Tradition (German). For older children and adults, I choose appropriate repertoire based on their musical interests, while still focusing on technique. Read More

There is no single definitive teaching method series. I try to tailor the method to the individual. For the beginning student, my personal favorite series is the Diller-Quaile because it offers a gradual and steady progression from basic to more complex. Also, the material presented is far more interesting than in most other collections. For a more advanced student, I generally assess their capabilities and very often introduce them to the Bach two and three part Inventions. Read More
