I'm a trombonist in my last semester of my Master's degree in performance and chamber music at the University of Michigan, and am so excited to share my knowledge with students of any age. My favorite thing about teaching is that no two students are the same; and no two lessons with the same student are either! It is so important to establish a goal for a student to work towards, so that they know what they're practicing for. Not huge goals either that are months away, but goals that can be accomplished between each lesson. Though I will use basic materials to give students the knowledge necessary to begin, I believe it is important to allow students to play things themselves, to make mistakes because that is how we learn. My goal is to teach people music not to show them, meaning I provide the framework for a student's improvement so the student themselves can finish building the way they want to. I keep it light and simple. In lessons, I am a listener as well as a teacher. I use the students own words to work through music. I encourage students to focus on what things feel like, and describe them, so that we can focus on what is working well!
