I began teaching beginner piano when I was in middle school and caught the teaching bug! (My dad was a high school choir teacher for thirty-five years, so I must have caught it from him.) For young students, I would usually start them off using Bastien Piano Basics. It's very digestible, and gives a good starting-off point for both technical playing, and larger musical concepts as a whole. With a student who is older or perhaps more advanced, who has a solid grasp on technical proficiency and music theory, I would typically recommend studying specific pieces, starting with Classical, and eventually moving into Jazz. I feel that following a chronological study of music is one of the best ways to become a well-rounded, versatile player who feels comfortable approaching any material. Read More

Again, the most important thing about learning any instrument is to have fun! If it's not fun, you won't continue to work hard at improving. That doesn't necessarily mean that I am not "tough" on a student. I think it is important to be honest and hold students accountable. I encourage my students to practice and think about how to approach new materials to make it less frustrating for my students. In addition, I use familiar melodies which includes classical and modern selections to help support the learning.
