Instruments: Piano Voice Violin Fiddle

I began teaching beginner piano when I was in middle school and caught the teaching bug! (My dad was a high school choir teacher for thirty-five years, so I must have caught it from him.) Now I teach violin/fiddle, voice and piano. I believe that learning classical music and sight reading are both fundamentals to begin learning any instrument. However, I love to teach other styles as well! I would love to work with budding musical theater performers who want to work on musicianship skills and/or learn piano/violin. Read More

When it comes to teaching, the one constant look for in all of my students is a budding passion for music. For some, it may take more time to develop said passion, but that is okay! Everyone moves at their own pace, and it differs from person to person. I firmly believe everybody has things they are good at, regardless of skill level, and I do everything in my power to hone in on those skills to make them the best they can be. Read More

For young students, I would usually start them off using Bastien Piano Basics. It's very digestible, and gives a good starting-off point for both technical playing, and larger musical concepts as a whole. With a student who is older or perhaps more advanced, who has a solid grasp on technical proficiency and music theory, I would typically recommend studying specific pieces, starting with Classical, and eventually moving into Jazz. I feel that following a chronological study of music is one of the best ways to become a well-rounded, versatile player who feels comfortable approaching any material. Read More

Again, the most important thing about learning any instrument is to have fun! If it's not fun, you won't continue to work hard at improving. That doesn't necessarily mean that I am not "tough" on a student. I think it is important to be honest and hold students accountable. However, I belive in celbrating all of the "wins" in life, no matter how small they may be. Let's work together to set lofty but attainable goals, and then let's have a blast arriving at all of these milestones . Read More

As I teach students, I constantly change my approaches depending on the needs of my students. I encourage my students to practice and think about how to approach new materials to make it less frustrating for my students. In addition, I use familiar melodies which includes classical and modern selections to help support the learning. I also allow my students to decide what they want to work on, but in exchange that they must complete certain tasks to help them develop their skills. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
