My music teaching experience begins with brass, both teaching private trumpet lessons, and assisting with various youth ensembles including the MusicAlliance Honor Band and several high school marching band ensembles. While I continue those engagements, my primary passion lies in directing choir, both youth and adult, as well teaching private voice lessons as I myself continue to study both areas. My responsibilities included teaching private lessons to undergraduate percussion majors and coaching percussion ensembles. I also began teaching students from middle school through high school age around the same time, and my students have since included those of adult age. From there, I get them playing songs that they recognize, teaching both by ear and with a method book. I started teaching about fifty years ago including private instruction as well as coaching and conducting bands, orchestras and chamber groups. I have become a better teacher with age since I have picked up procedures and strategies which have proved effective in encouraging my students to make music. I start every student with basic terminology for the instrument. I work on bow technique and instrument technique very early on, I believe every student wants to play as soon as possible. Music should be fun and as such, if a student is not enjoying lessons anymore I do not push and leave the option to end up to the student and parents.
