The methods and approaches I use depend greatly on the student and their needs. The most important thing for me is to find repertoire that addresses the students needs and interests. For classical guitar students, there are a variety of methods that I regularly utilize (Julio Sagreras, The Royal Conservatory Series, Suzuki Guitar Method, Charles Duncan), and often supplement with other pieces/etudes. I am a passionate musician who has been privately trained in instrumental and vocal music since I was 8 years old. I have had many opportunities as a trumpeter and vocalist, which include performing with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and Choir, the Sioux City Symphony, and soloing alongside legendary jazz trumpet player, Jon Faddis. I have won numerous awards in music, such as Outstanding Soloist at the AU Jazz Competition in 2012 and 2014, as well as Outstanding Brass Soloist at the KCKCC Jazz Competition in 2015. Read More

I do expect regular practice outside of lessons; I do not want lessons to simply be a guided practice session. Ideally, students would fully prepare the assigned material for each lesson-- not that it needs to be perfect, but that I can tell that he or she has been working on it. For students who are clearly putting in a reasonable amount of effort, I reward them by writing out melodies of their favorite pop songs for them to learn to play. Read More
