Instruments: Piano Voice Trumpet Trombone Saxophone Euphonium French Horn
As I've said above, my teaching is curtailed to the individual needs of my students. I stress development as a complete musician, and that often includes breaking away from technique to discuss other ideas like music theory, ear training, etc. Most importantly, I can explain difficult concepts in many ways. I am a degreed educator, having studied various learning styles and philosophies. I incorporate techniques from Kodaly, Orff, Suzuki, Dalcroze, Alexander--- each student has different needs. Instruments: Clarinet
I teach Clarinet while incorporating the voice. Singing one's solo or exercise is a method for teaching intonation on the Clarinet. I also use a system of putting certain vowels to the different ranges of the Clarinet (i.e.- one should think "O" when playing in the Clarion register because thinking that vowel will naturally open one's throat). This eventually becomes second nature when the student doesn't have to think vowels. Read More
Instruments: Guitar
I have been teaching guitar/ songwriting since I was a teenager. My first students were my nephews and niece, which was a great introduction in learning to work with young kids. Over the past decade I have taught students of all ages and experience levels while working at a music store in Columbus. I specialize in songwriting, and love to work with students of all skill levels who want to begin composing their own songs but aren't certain how to begin. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet French Horn
Students learn best in different ways and at different paces. I enjoy getting to know my students' strengths and trying multiple strategies to help them learn new concepts. Learning to play an instrument is very special because students can see and hear their own progress in real time. This is what makes learning and teaching the horn so exciting! Read More
Instruments: Drums Latin Percussion
My method varies for each student since every student will learn differently. I start by assessing where a student is at in terms of skill level and what their intentions are for learning how to play drums/percussion. For younger students, I'll start with getting their coordination together so they can begin to play and be involved in the learning process. After that, I'll begin to teach fundamentals and stylistic things to get them going. Read More
Instruments: Violin Cello Viola Trombone Double Bass
I try to enable all of my students to gain a better more meanigful appreciation for music. I enjoy teaching and try to incorporate technique while learning music. Regular practice is a good habit to learn early on and I ask all students to bring a notebook to lessons so progress can be recorded. Regular attendance is important to continue to learn their new skill and I think learning a new discipline needs to be enjoyed. Read More
Instruments: Guitar Bass Guitar
A parent of a former studnet of mine had this to say about me - "Owen has been our 11 year old daughters guitar teacher for almost two years. During that period she has excelled, not only in ability but also in self-confidence and her enthusiasm for playing. Owen is a gifted teacher but he is also warm, patient and fun." - Samantha J. I love teaching and there is nothing more rewarding to me than seeing a students passion for the instrument and music grow. Read More
