My musical journey began at nine years old with piano lessons - not at all an uncommon beginning but an important one. Less than two years later I joined the band playing clarinet. As a high school student, all-state performances and honor bands fiilled many weekends, and I had the privilege of playing regularly in my church on the piano. While playing in a youth symphony as a senior, we toured in Austria absorbing centers of musical history and playing in four uniquely different venues including a wing of the Schonbrunn Palace. I started teaching lessons when I was 18 at a music business and taught there between 3 to 5 hours a week for about 5 years. For the past 5 years I have been teaching at IU. I have taught many different styles from classical to jazz to rock, etc. and have also watched many great teachers and tried to learn from their methods. I believe in teaching music that the student wants to learn, whether that's the latest pop song or basic music theory which can be applied to any style. For my piano students, I prefer Alfred's piano curriculum. For my guitar students, I use Hal Leanord books. For my voice students, we work on whatever songs they want to learn or have assigned to them for a performance. For flute, I like Rubank method, but am open to other preferred methods as well.
