I use two pianos minimum for my lessons, along with recordings at multiple speeds in order to minimize the rhythmic mistakes so common in private lessons. Students are taught to make the connection between what they are playing and hearing, and what others are playing and hearing. Composition and Improvisation play an important roll in this connection, which is why I make it a part of every lesson. I believe that making progress in an enjoyable way is what keeps people most motivated, and I do my best to make that happen. While students will find that their progress is influenced by their practice habits, it's also my goal to make clear what effective practice looks like, what kinds of questions they might ask to figure things out, and how to be patient with themselves. When I teach, I dont force a certain technique or method on students, but rather I teach what is best suited for them. On top of that, I always motivate my students with adequate goals. For students that are new to music I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, this book is really good to start to learn about music and the instrument, and then Suzuki method for repertoire.
